Prairie Ecosystems and the American Bison

Bison are a keystone species of tallgrass prairie ecosystems, with intimate ties to Indigenous cultures. After more than 200 years' absence, bison have returned to Kane County prairie. As part of a three-way partnership between the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, the American Indian Center of Chicago, and Ruhter Bison, a bison herd now thrives at Burlington Prairie Forest Preserve. Explore the incredible diversity of a tallgrass prairie ecosystem at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, then travel to Burlington Prairie to experience bison ecology firsthand. Learn about the crucial role that bison play in a healthy grassland. We will also share the rich cultural and spiritual significance of bison to Native people with the American Indian Center. This workshop is for grades 6-12, but can easily be adapted for other grades. Supplemental classroom materials provided. Professional Development Hours are available.
