Introducing Early Childhood Students to Fungi and Decomposers

Discover how fungi and decay help keep our natural world healthy and thriving. In this engaging, hands-on workshop, educators will explore the important role mushrooms, molds, insects, and decomposers play in breaking down once-living materials and returning nutrients to the soil. Participants will learn fun facts, investigate natural materials, and take a guided hike to search for signs of fungus and decomposition in the environment. Through observation, sensory exploration, storytelling, and outdoor discovery, educators will gain practical ideas for bringing the fascinating processes of fungus and decay into their classroom or nature-based program while fostering curiosity, scientific thinking, and a deeper connection to nature. Supplemental classroom resources will be provided. Professional Development Hours are available.
